\nThis rare exhibition, organized by the LSG – Lusophone Society of Goa, also throws light on the issues the Goa State was facing at that time.<\/p>\n

\nArt Gallery, Goa State Central Library, Patto, Panjim<\/p>\nThe Makondes are a people from eastern Africa, who live at three plateaus of northern Mozambique and southern Tanzania in the province of Cabo Delgado. The hypothesis of their origin is determined from the analyses of written and oral sources and is further reinforced by cultural similarities with the Chewa people, who still inhabit a vast area south and southwest of Lake Nyasa, Malawi and Zambia. The Makonde belonged in ancient times to the huge federation Marave, who had begun their migration to the northeast along the river valley Lugenda at times quite distant.<\/p>\n

\nArt Gallery, Goa State Central Library, Patto, Panjim<\/p>\nThe current municipality (formerly “district”) of Baucau occupies a large area of the eastern part of East Timor. It is the second city in the country and had, during the Portuguese administration, the designation of “Vila Salazar”.
\nThe amateur “photographer” Ant\u00f3nio Almeida Serra relegated the artistic aspect of the photographs to the background, being fundamental criterion of the photograph’s selection the ability to illustrate both the land and the people as well as buildings which reflect the built heritage of Portuguese origin in this area.
\nAnt\u00f3nio Almeida Serra loves this region, knowing it relatively well. University Professor (Economics) in Portugal for about 40 years, he has been living in and working with East Timor since it liberated itself from Indonesian Administration, more specifically since 2001.<\/p>\n

\nArt Gallery, Goa State Central Library, Patto, Panjim<\/p>\nThe largest city in the southern hemisphere, S\u00e3o Paulo is unquestionably Brazil’s most cosmopolitan city and the economic powerhouse of the nation. Yet S\u00e3o Paulo is also marked by profound rifts of class, of oppulent upper-class neighbourhoods surrounded by extensive, marginalised slum districts and a city centre that mixes a rich fabric of history with patches of utter decay. A local saying has it that ‘S\u00e3o Paulo n\u00e3o p\u00e1ra” (S\u00e3o Paulo never stops) and even the most fleeting visitor to the city cannot fail to notice the environment shift around him with new faces, new buildings, new angles appearing at a vertiginous rate.
\nThe images presented here reflect a street photographic practice that was not guided by the aims of a focused project, but which allowed itself to be guided by the happenstance of the streets, the chance encounter, the quiet moments, tiny fragments of the non-stop spectacle that is S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n

\nThe amateur “photographer” Ant\u00f3nio Almeida Serra relegated the artistic aspect of the photographs to the background, being fundamental criterion of the photograph’s selection the ability to illustrate both the land and the people as well as buildings which reflect the built heritage of Portuguese origin in this area.
\nAnt\u00f3nio Almeida Serra loves this region, knowing it relatively well. University Professor (Economics) in Portugal for about 40 years, he has been living in and working with East Timor since it liberated itself from Indonesian Administration, more specifically since 2001.<\/p>\n
